Webb Chemical is a proud supporter of The Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF). Webb joins the Chemical Educational Foundation in its commitment to enhancing science education. We partner with CEF both financially and by hosting a local You Be the Chemist event each year. This year’s event took place in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Thursday, March 3. Collin B., Webb Chemical Account Manager, shares about his experience at last week’s event.
You Be the Chemist uses a spelling bee format to ask middle school students questions. Questions focus on chemistry content learned in the classroom. Questions range in difficulty from easy to those that students will see on high school tests. This program seeks to increase our middle school students’ interest in STEM careers. Openings for STEM jobs have increased every year for the past ten years and are expected to keep increasing. There were 5.7 million new STEM job openings in 2013 alone (US News).
Webb team members Brad H., Cathy B., Melisa B., and I had the opportunity to lead these students in this competition. We were thoroughly impressed by the level of knowledge these middle school students have! The event went smoothly, thanks in part to our friends over at PVS. PVS initially got Webb involved in this event three years ago.
One of the best highlights was watching the final two contestants take on AP level Chemistry questions and nail them. It’s always fun to see young students answer questions most adults would have trouble with.
